Overview

ClipperDipper by Capaho Web is a clipboard archive utility that maintains a list of text, pictures and raw data in memory that were previously copied to the clipboard from other applications such as web browsers, document or graphics editors, mail readers, etc. A list can also be saved to the ClipperDipper data file so that it can be restored the next time ClipperDipper runs. If Auto Acquire is enabled while ClipperDipper is running it will periodically check the clipboard at a specified interval for new items. The clipboard can also be checked manually at any time by clicking the "Get Item" button. Selected list items can be sent back to the clipboard where they can be pasted into other applications.

ClipperDipper behavior can be changed by changing the settings on the front panel controls. Default settings can be changed by clicking the Save Settings button on the front panel or in the Options panel accesible from the Edit Menu. The Options panel includes the same controls as on the front panel plus the color settings for the list items, the ClipperDipper hide window settings and the Clipboard Status control.

The Item Format settings determine the file types that will be acquired from the clipboard by ClipperDipper.

Text - Text items will be acquired from the clipboard

Pictures - Picture items will be acquired from the clipboard

Data - Raw data will be acquired from the clipboard

Use Base64 encoding for saved text - (Located in the Options panel) If enabled ClipperDipper will encode text in Base64 before saving it to the ClipperDipper data file. Base64 encoding ensures that any formatting information stored with the text is accurately recalled when text data is restored to the list from the ClipperDipper database. If you have saved text from a previous version of ClipperDipper follow the procedure indicated in the Troubleshooting section to recover it after installing ClipperDipper 3.0.

The front panel settings can be changed while ClipperDipper is running without affecting the default settings (unless the Save Settings button is clicked). Changes to these settings will take effect on the next interval cycle as determined by the Interval setting.

Send Item

Windows
Main Panel View:
Mac OS X
Main Panel View:

The Send Item button sends the selected list item to the clipboard, replacing whatever else was on the clipboard.

Windows Users Note: If the selected item is raw file data copied from a folder some of the data was stored in scrap memory and not on the clipboard. This scrap memory is cleared or overwritten by the Windows OS as soon as a new item is copied to the clipboard. Although ClipperDipper will send raw file data captured from the clipboard back to the clipboard, Windows users will not be able to paste the file directly from the clipboard if the scrap memory associated with that data has been cleared or overwritten. If raw file data is sent back to the clipboard by ClipperDipper on a Windows system, ClipperDipper will open a file dialog box and handle the paste process directly. If the selected item is raw application data it may not be useable outside of the application from which it was copied.

Linux Users Note: If the selected item is a file url copied from a folder the file url will be stored as text and any raw data that may have been copied is usually not available through the clipboard. Although ClipperDipper will send a file url captured from the clipboard back to the clipboard, Linux users will not be able to paste the file directly from the clipboard. If text that resembles a file url is sent back to the clipboard by ClipperDipper on a Linux system, ClipperDipper will ask the user to confirm whether or not the text is a file url and, if confirmed, will open a file dialog box and handle the paste process directly.

Troubleshooting

Saved Text is Garbled After Upgrading to ClipperDipper 3.0:
By default ClipperDipper 3.0 encodes text in Base64 before saving it in the ClipperDipper data file. If you have saved text from a previous version of ClipperDipper follow these steps to recover it:

1. Uncheck Use Base64 encoding for saved text in the Options panel and then click the Save button
2. Select Refresh from the File Menu to reload your saved data
3. Check Use Base64 encoding for saved text in the Options panel and then click the Save button
4. Click the Save List Items button on the front panel to re-save your data

Cannot Restore Hidden ClipperDipper Window in Linux:
Either the system tray icon or Hide Control Icon on the desktop can be used to restore a hidden ClipperDipper window but the system tray icon requires GTK+ 2.1 or higher. On older versions of Linux the tray icon may not be visible, in which case it is necessary to use the Hide Control Icon. If the Hide Control Icon has been disabled in the user settings and the tray icon is not visible it will be necessary to locate and delete the file ClipperDipperData, then restart ClipperDipper, to restore window control. Do not disable the Hide Control Icon on systems where the tray icon is not visible.

Data File Errors:
ClipperDipper uses a binary data file to store basic information such as user settings as well as any saved list items. The default name for this data file is ClipperDipperData. ClipperDipper expects this data file to be located in the ClipperDipper directory along with the ClipperDipper program file. ClipperDipper must have write access to the directory in which it is located in order to create and manage the data file.

NEVER ATTEMPT TO ACCESS THE CLIPPERDIPPER DATA FILE DIRECTLY. ATTEMPTING TO OPEN OR EDIT THIS FILE MANUALLY MAY DAMAGE IT, RESULTING IN THE LOSS OF SAVED DATA!

If the data file is missing or damaged ClipperDipper will attempt to restore it using program defaults. If ClipperDipper is successful the program will restart and open the ClipperDipper window. If ClipperDipper cannot create a new data file or repair an existing one that has been damaged, data file error messages may keep repeating and ClipperDipper may not be able to start. If ClipperDipper is unable to repair a damaged data file it will be necessary to manually locate and delete the ClipperDipperData file and then re-start ClipperDipper. This method will almost always solve any data file errors, provided that ClipperDipper can write into the directory where it is located.

Memory Problems:
ClipperDipper keeps list items in memory so that they can be accessed quickly when needed. Maintaining a very large list, especially one that contains large pictures, can consume significant amounts of memory and degrade system performance.

On systems with modest memory capcity it may be advisable to leave Auto Acquire set to "Off" or Item Format set to "Text" in order to prevent unnecessary items, particularly pictures, from being acquired automatically. These settings can be changed from the front panel as needed while ClipperDipper is running in order to change ClipperDipper behavior regarding the acquisition of clipboard items.

If the list becomes too big, deleting individual items from the list also deletes them from memory (but not automatically from the data file).

Copying Directly From Folders:
If you attempt to copy a file directly from a folder, file and location information are usually copied to the clipboard rather than the file itself. ClipperDipper sees this as raw application or system data and captures whatever raw data is actually available on the clipboard, except in Linux where the file url is seen as text. In Windows, some of the raw data is held in scrap memory and not on the clipboard. If file data is sent back to the clipboard by ClipperDipper on a Windows or Linux system, ClipperDipper will open a file dialog box and handle the paste process directly.

Raw Application Data:
Raw application data copied to the clipboard may not be useable outside of the application from which it was copied. In Linux, raw application data may be stored in memory that is not accessible through the clipboard.

Copying Pictures Embedded in Documents:
If you want to copy a picture that is embedded in a document, first open the document in an appropriate application such as a word processor. Place the mouse cursor over the picture and right-click, then select the Copy Image option from the pop-up menu (assuming the application supports this function).

Saved List Items:
Each time ClipperDipper starts, or each time "Refresh" is selected from the File Menu, any list items currently stored in the data file will be re-loaded into memory and will appear in the list window.

Each time the "Save List Items" button is pressed, it saves the current list items to the data file, overwriting any previously saved list items. If any previously saved items are deleted from the list, they will be removed from the data file the next time the "Save List Items" button is pressed.

Previously saved items that are deleted from the list but still present in the data file can be restored to the list while ClipperDipper is running by selecting "Refresh" from the File Menu.

Clicking the "Delete All" button will delete all list items, all saved items and clear the clipboard.
